Everest Base Camp Trek Preparation

The Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek is a dream for many—but achieving it safely and successfully takes more than just motivation. Preparation is key. This guide helps you get fully ready—physically, mentally, and logistically—for one of the world’s most iconic Himalayan journeys.

1. Understand the Route and Altitude

The standard EBC trek takes 12–14 days and reaches a maximum altitude of 5,364 meters (17,598 ft). The route passes through rugged terrain, suspension bridges, and traditional Sherpa villages. Read our main trek overview to explore the route in depth.

2. Fitness Training & Endurance

You don’t need to be a mountaineer, but strong cardiovascular fitness is essential. Train 6–8 weeks prior with uphill hiking, stair climbing, and long-distance walks. Add strength training and loaded backpack hikes to simulate real conditions.

3. Altitude Acclimatization & AMS Awareness

Most trekkers underestimate the effects of high altitude. Altitude sickness can ruin your trip or worse. Learn the symptoms and how to avoid it in our detailed AMS guide. Allow rest days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, and stay hydrated.

4. Packing List: Gear & Essentials

  • Sturdy trekking boots (broken in)
  • Thermal base layers, fleece, down jacket
  • Sleeping bag (rated for -10°C or lower)
  • Water purification (tablets or UV)
  • Trekking poles, sun protection, gloves
  • Headlamp, power bank, altitude meds

Many of these items can be rented or bought in Kathmandu. Don’t overpack—keep your daypack light.

5. Permits & Documentation

You’ll need two permits:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
If booking with an agency like ours, we take care of these. Ensure your passport is valid and carry extra passport-size photos.

6. Timing: When to Go

Season matters. Spring (Mar–May) and Autumn (Sept–Nov) offer the best weather and views. Learn more in our Best Time to Trek EBC article.

7. Mental Readiness

Prepare for long days, early mornings, and fluctuating weather. Mindset makes a difference. Read real experiences in our beginner’s guide to set realistic expectations and get inspired.

8. Age & Group Considerations

Trekking with children or older family members? See our in-depth post on age and health considerations for safe planning across age groups.

9. Choose a Trusted Local Partner
