About this Treks

The Route

The Mardi Himal trek starts in the Pokhara hills and climbs through forest camp, Low Camp, and High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp, around 4,500 m. It is one of the shorter Annapurna walks.

What You’ll See

Machapuchare feels close on the ridge, with Annapurna South beside it. Above the trees the path is open and the camp sits under the peak.

Day by Day

About five days is the usual length. The last morning is steep. Lodges are simpler than on the ABC trail, and nights at High Camp are cold.

People & Places

The lower villages are Gurung. You share the ridge with far fewer people than on the base-camp path. The Annapurna permit and a licensed guide apply here too.

Why This Trip

Choose Mardi Himal when you want a high Annapurna camp and you do not have a full week for Annapurna Base Camp.

Itinerary

  1. Day1

Drive from Pokhara to Dhampus (1,650m), Trek to Forest Camp (2,550m)

Your adventure begins with a morning drive (1 hour) from Pokhara to Dhampus, a beautiful Gurung village perched on a ridge with excellent views of the Annapurna range. After breakfast and a brief rest, you start your trek through rhododendron and oak forests. The trail gradually ascends toward Pitam Deurali, where permits are checked. From here, you leave the main Annapurna trail and head toward the more secluded Forest Camp, walking through dense and peaceful woodland.

Forest Camp to High Camp (3,580m)

After breakfast, you begin a steady ascent through beautiful rhododendron and oak forests. The trail gradually opens up as you gain altitude, revealing stunning views of Machapuchare (Fishtail). You’ll pass through Low Camp and Badal Danda, a scenic ridge point with jaw-dropping Himalayan panoramas.

From Badal Danda, the path becomes more alpine — fewer trees, more sky, and more snow-capped peaks surrounding you. The final stretch to High Camp follows a narrow ridge with endless mountain views on both sides. Reaching High Camp by afternoon gives you time to rest and enjoy a dramatic sunset behind Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

Begin your day early for the spectacular hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp. The trail climbs steadily along a ridge with dramatic drops on both sides and uninterrupted views of Machapuchare, Annapurna South, and surrounding peaks. The early start allows you to witness the mountains bathed in morning light — a magical experience.

After spending time at the base camp (or the viewpoint, depending on weather and energy), descend the same way but instead of stopping again at High Camp, continue down to Badal Danda (3,210m) or Low Camp (3,050m). Both locations offer cozy teahouses with mountain views, and choosing either gives a sense of progress without retracing the full route.

Magic Moments on the Mardi Himal Trail

I did the Mardi Himal Trek on August 14, 2023, and it was an unforgettable experience. The weather was mostly good—just a bit of rain here and there, but nothing that got in the way of the adventure. The trail was full of stunning natural beauty—the flora and fauna were incredible, and the soothing sound of rivers and waterfalls made everything feel so peaceful.

One of the highlights for me was the clear view of the mountains—absolutely breathtaking. And the night view from High Camp, looking down at the sparkling lights of Pokhara, felt magical. But what really stuck with me was the moment at Badal Danda, standing above the clouds. It felt like I was on top of the world. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

It’s beginner-friendly but moderately challenging. Daily hikes of 4-6 hours involve steep ascents and descents on narrow trails, reaching 4,500m. Basic fitness (e.g., regular walking or cardio) and mental preparation for basic tea house conditions are enough—no technical skills required.

Do I Need a Guide or Porter for the Mardi Himal Trek?

Not required, but recommended. Guides ($20-25/day) navigate trails and share local insights, while porters ($15-20/day) carry up to 15 kg, making the trek easier. The trail is less crowded, but local support enhances safety and supports Gurung communities.

How Much Does the Mardi Himal Trek Cost in 2026?

Budget treks cost $400-800, covering permits ($40), tea house lodging, and meals. Luxury packages with better accommodations may reach $1,000. Add $50-100 for gear rentals, $20-50 for tips, and transport from Pokhara ($10-20). Solo trekkers can manage for $300-500.

What Should I Pack for the Mardi Himal Trek?

Essentials include waterproof hiking boots, a 0°C sleeping bag, layers (thermal, fleece, rain jacket), sunglasses, trekking poles, and a first-aid kit with Diamox. Keep your pack under 8 kg; rent gear in Pokhara for convenience.

Is There an Age Limit for the Mardi Himal Trek?

No age limit! Trekkers from teens to seniors (60+) can do it with good health and moderate fitness. Consult a doctor for high-altitude risks, especially for older trekkers or those with medical conditions, and acclimatize properly.
