About this Treks

The Route

The Annapurna Base Camp trek leaves Pokhara for Nayapul, then climbs through Ghandruk and Chhomrong into the Modi valley. The last walk ends at 4,130 m inside the Annapurna Sanctuary.

What You’ll See

Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South, and Machapuchare stand around the camp. Lower on the ridge the land is terraces and rhododendron forest.

Day by Day

Most people take about a week. Days are five to seven hours on stone steps, with a slower night in the hills before the thin air at base camp.

People & Places

Ghandruk and Chhomrong are Gurung villages. Nights are teahouses: dal bhat in the dining room, cold bedrooms, and a short namaste is enough of a greeting.

Why This Trip

People choose the ABC trek when they want a high camp without the longer Everest walk. A licensed guide and the Annapurna Conservation Area permit are part of the trip.

Expect cozy tea house stays, vibrant local culture, and stunning sunrise views from the base camp.

When is the Best Time to Trek Annapurna Base Camp?

Spring (March–May) is ideal for blooming rhododendrons and mild weather, while autumn (September–November) offers clear skies and stable conditions. Monsoon (June–August) brings slippery trails and rain, reducing visibility. Winter (December–February) is colder with possible snow at higher altitudes, but trekable with proper gear.

How Difficult is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek for Beginners?

The ABC Trek is moderately challenging, suitable for beginners with basic fitness. Daily hikes of 5-7 hours involve steep ascents, descents, and stone steps, reaching 4,130m. Prepare with cardio and leg-strength exercises (e.g., walking, stair climbing) for 6-8 weeks. No technical skills are needed, but mental preparedness for basic tea house conditions is key.

Do I Need a Guide or Porter for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Since 2023, Nepal mandates licensed guides ($25-35/day) for foreign trekkers, ensuring safety and supporting locals. Guides navigate trails, share cultural insights, and handle emergencies. Porters ($15-25/day) carry up to 20 kg, easing your load. Both are recommended for beginners to enhance safety and enjoyment.

How Much Does the Annapurna Base Camp Trek Cost in 2026?

Budget treks cost $800-1,200, covering permits ($50), tea house lodging, meals, and guide/porter fees. Luxury packages with better accommodations range from $1,200-1,800. Add $50-100 for gear rentals, $30-70 for tips, and $20-40 for transport from Pokhara. Solo trekkers can manage for $600-900 with minimal extras.

Is There an Age Limit for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

No age limit exists, with trekkers from teens to seniors (60+) completing the trek. Good health and moderate fitness are essential. Older trekkers or those with medical conditions should consult a doctor for high-altitude risks and ensure proper acclimatization to prevent altitude sickness.

How Can I Avoid Altitude Sickness on the ABC Trek?

Ascend gradually with rest days at Chomrong (2,170m) and Deurali (3,200m), hydrate (3-4L/day), and avoid alcohol. Watch for symptoms like headaches or nausea, and descend if they worsen. Diamox (prescribed) can help prevent altitude sickness. Consult a doctor before trekking.
