About this Tours

The Route

The five days are split between Kathmandu and Chitwan National Park. The jungle is the main part. The capital is a day or two before and after.

What You’ll See

Rhinos, deer, and water birds on the Rapti. If a Kathmandu day is on the plan, you also see a Durbar Square or a stupa.

Day by Day

It is a short trip. The drive each way takes a day. You go out at dawn, and once more before dusk. Midday is hot and quiet.

People & Places

In Chitwan, a visit to a Tharu village is the usual stop. The hotels are in Sauraha and Kathmandu. You do not need a mountain permit.

Why This Trip

You pick these five days when time is short and you want the jungle more than the mountains.

Additional Information

On the trail

A Tharu nightA cultural house in Sauraha explains the dance. Photograph the dancers only after the guide says it is fine.

TemplesSome shrines do not allow leather. Walk clockwise. Ask before you photograph a ritual.

Best time to go

October to MarchThese are the easier months. Jeeps in Chitwan stop in the monsoon and usually start again in October. Kathmandu is clear and cool.

The hot seasonApril and May are bright in Pokhara, and Chitwan is hot. Wear a hat and drink more water than you think.

What to pack

Two kinds of clothesOne modest set for temples, and light-colored clothes for the safari. Bright colors do not suit the grassland.

Shoes you can slip offYou take your shoes off many times at temples. Slip-ons are easier.

Cost and permits

Park entryChitwan entry is about 2,000 rupees per foreigner for one day. The jeep is separate. Kathmandu heritage tickets are small. Pay at the gate if the quote does not say they are included.
