Lumbini, in the Terai, is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama. A half day covers the Maya Devi temple, the Ashoka pillar, and the monastic zone.

About this Activity

The Route

The Lumbini tour goes to the birthplace of the Buddha on the Terai plain. The Maya Devi temple and the Ashokan pillar are the centre. The road from Kathmandu takes most of a day, or you fly to Bhairahawa.

What You’ll See

The sacred garden, the pillar, monasteries built by several countries, and flat farmland to the horizon. There is no mountain view here.

Day by Day

The middle of the day is hot, even in winter. Morning in the garden, then the monasteries. This is not a trek and there is no teahouse night.

People & Places

Pilgrims and monks use the garden quietly. Shoulders covered, shoes off at the temple. Hotels are in Lumbini or nearby Bhairahawa.

Why This Trip

Come for Lumbini itself. Do not try to squeeze it between two hill days.
